October 27, 2026 – PRESSADVANTAGE –
CGH Injury Lawyers is drawing attention to a new state school zone law as students complete their first fall of walking and biking to class under the expanded rules. House Bill 26-1318, known as the Liam Stewart School Zone Act, took effect Aug. 12 and sets a statewide minimum school zone of 1,000 feet around school property.
Before the law, state statute set no minimum size for a school zone, according to a summary of the new laws released by AAA. Under the act, existing zones of at least 200 feet cannot be reduced, shorter zones must be extended to at least 200 feet, and a local government may set a zone smaller than 1,000 feet only after a public hearing. The law also allows automated enforcement of moving violations in school zones and on designated safe routes to school, and it lets local governments close designated school streets to vehicle traffic. Local governments may also expand zones beyond 1,000 feet and share signage costs with the local school board, while state highways cannot be designated as school streets, according to AAA.
“Families now have one statewide standard for where a school zone begins,” said Kevin Cheney, managing partner of CGH Injury Lawyers and a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates. “The firm is sharing the details so parents and drivers know the new boundaries before the morning school commute.”
The act is named for Liam Stewart, a 13-year-old who was killed by a driver in October 2023 while riding his bicycle to middle school, according to reporting by KJCT. His father, Josh Stewart, told the station that the law creates the first statewide standard for school zones and that inconsistent boundaries between communities had caused confusion. He said next steps include educating parents, principals and school boards about the new standard.
The measure was one of six traffic safety laws that took effect Aug. 12, and AAA reported that 701 people were killed on the state’s roads in 2025. Of those deaths, 235 involved an impaired driver. Another of the new laws makes stopping, standing or parking in a marked bike lane illegal statewide. A separate law, Senate Bill 26-072, took effect Sept. 1 and created a class 5 felony charge of criminally negligent homicide for deaths caused by criminally negligent driving, filling a gap between careless driving resulting in death and vehicular homicide, according to the AAA summary.
The law’s first fall coincides with Walk and Roll to School Day, observed Oct. 7 this year, an annual event that encourages students to walk and bike to school. CGH Injury Lawyers, formerly known as Cheney Galluzzi & Howard LLC, represents people injured in vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian crashes and families in wrongful death claims. The firm adopted its current name in April 2026.
The firm’s attorneys serve on the state Department of Transportation’s Vulnerable Road User Safety Task Force, according to the firm’s website. Cheney, one of the firm’s eight attorneys, has tried more than 25 cases to verdict, and the firm has bilingual English and Spanish staff, according to the site.
